Wooyeon lee : For One's Own Territory

For One’s Own Territory_ I saw a sign for prohibiting parking around street in a town. The sign was made of plastic and aluminum that can be easily found around the city, for a purpose of advertising stores by hanging a small banner on it. These kinds of standing signs can be seen in many places where ordinary people live. Yet, I sometimes discover these signs standing without their original commercial banners. The undecorated plain frames strongly attract me, thus allowing me to stare at them for a longer period of time. Moreover, if the owners of those signs decide to change their locations and angles of the frame as they please, the signs turn into a unique piece of art that is wholly different from the mass-produced ones. This is the reason why I carefully examine the standing signs with curiosity.

Although there are some differences in the process of remaking those ready-made signs, it is not difficult to notice the freedom of choices, new purposes – usually for the owners themselves, -- and actual commitment from the restructured objects. The structures may seem to be weak, unskilled, or even ludicrous. Yet, they are weak or unskilled because the creators are not professional, and they look ludicrous because the makers did not care much about the design of them. These characteristics rather inspire the objects to be truthful and from this truthfulness, I find a dim possibility that there are still some chances to escape from the ghost of long-dominated conventions.
