이우연은 가볍고 부서지기 쉬운 재료들에 내재한 힘을 이용해서 작가 자신에게 가해지는 폭력적인 상황들을 담담하게 드러내는 작업들로 시작, 소극적이고 수동적이지만 때때로 매우 적극적인 형태로 나타나는 소요(riot)를 오브제, 설치의 성격이 강한 오브제, 오브제 설치 후 기록된 사진작업 등으로 진행하고 있습니다.

주변에서 어렵지 않게 “발견되는, 혹은 작가의 생존에 사소하지만 매우 날카로운 위협”으로 다가오는 크고 작은 폭력성 앞에서 최소한의 반란의 제스츄어를 계획합니다. 작가가 다루는 물질이나 작업의 형태에서 발견되는 ‘최소’의 개념은 폭력적 상황들에 대한 지적을 하려는 작은 욕구, 반란을 시작하려는 개인의 아이디어, 반대하려는 움직임(기운)과 관련이 있습니다.

최근에는 조직이나 사회의 구성원으로 살아갈 수 밖에 없는 평범한 사람들의 숨겨진 무능함, 그들에게서 간혹 분출되는 무력한 투쟁의 가능성에 관심을 가지고 있고 그와 관련된 ‘On The Road’ 작업을 구상 중입니다.

By using the force inherent in light and fragile materials, Woo-yeon Lee has proceeded with works calmly expressing violent occasions, which she is given herself.  Moreover, she even tries to express riots, appearing negative and passive but sometimes very positive, through objects themselves, objects with a strong feature of installation and photo-works recorded after installing objects.

She is also planning to make gestures of minimum rebellion against high or low degrees of violence ‘easily found in our daily lives or approaching as a threat which may not be serious to the artist’s existence but still very acute’.  The concept of ‘the Minimum’ found in the materials or work patterns that the artist deals with is related to small desires to indicate violent occasions, personal ideas to start rebellion and movements (atmosphere) to oppose to violence.

Getting recently interested in the hidden incompetence of ordinary people who cannot but live as members of an organization or a society along with the possibility of powerless struggles the people burst forth, she is thinking of working on the art product, ‘On The Road’ which is related to the interests of her.
